Cavalli Island Retreat & Spa

Extensive renovations saw the old cottage on Step Island transformed, with an exclusive spa retreat designed by Ken Crosson built adjacent.

The hill slope behind has been revegetated with a mix of coastal natives, which will progressively be extended over the whole island to provide a bird sanctuary.

Terraced sleeper retaining walls were used to reclaim the foreshore in front of the building to provide an area for the swimming pool and landscaping.

The use of hardy coastal edge species such as Muehlenbeckia, Leptocarpus, Coprosma, and Poa soften the walls and link the buildings into the landscape.

Large Pohutukawa and cabbage trees have been used to soften the edges of the buildings.

The existing large Pohutukawa was also relocated to make way for the buildings.

The private island can be hired, or day trips on the launch Mission Hills.
